Making Masks

These photos document the process of making the masks for "Chasing Rodriguez"

Beleive it or not, I'm actually quite happy.

These are the sculpts of the faces with clay walls for pouring plaster.

these are the plaster molds after the clay is removed.

The Masks after being cast in flexible slip and after having eyes nose and mouths cut into.

Fully painted masks, strung and ready to go.

  1. Flexible slip? Are these masks ceramic? How thick?

  2. They are a little thicker than an 8th of an inch. Flexible slip is a mix of clay and latex, no firing required. It has the consistency of leather once it's dry. It also goes by the name of mannequin rubber I think.
